the concept of a “minor” allows adults to strip autonomy away from younger people. kids and teens deserve the same human rights as anyone else. the idea that if you are below a certain age you are incapable of thinking for yourself is a very harmful one!!

believing that young people are unable to make decisions on their own due to an “underdeveloped brain” is what makes it so easy to see nothing wrong with treating them as property. after all, they can't think for themselves anyways! 🚩🚩🚩

also, no matter how much u sugar coat ur disdain for “minors” it still comes from stigma against them and the belief that youth and adults are inherently and profoundly different because of their age difference.

“they're just too annoying” “we have nothing in common” “why would a Grown Adult be friends with a Literal Child” are all things people say as if they're not perpetuating bigotry against a group of human beings.

it shouldn't have to be compared to the way other minorities are treated to be understood. we shouldn't have to remind you that sentiments like these mirror and perpetuate bigoted beliefs like racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, etc. but imma keep doing it til it clicks!

“it's just my personal preference, i'm allowed to have boundaries.” and that preference / 'boundary' still comes from the belief that laws reflect morality as opposed to limiting the rights and autonomy of certain groups of people. “be gay do crimes” but never question why u are taught that a 17 year old is fundamentally different from an 18 year old.
