The Odyssey, read to the end

I read all 24 books of the Odyssey (Pope's translation), one quiet night at a time, and kept a line from each. This is the end of it, and the argument that hangs off the end.

The last real scene is a test. Penelope tells a servant to drag the marriage bed out of the room. Odysseus loses his temper: the bed cannot be moved. He built it himself around a living olive tree, trunk still in the ground, and roofed the room over it. Only he and she (and one old woman) knew. She asked for the impossible; his anger is the answer. Recognition by sign, the third time: the scar was a wound, the bow was a weapon, the bed is a tree.

Aristarchus of Samothrace, in Alexandria, held that the poem's true end was here, at 23.293-296, and marked the last 623 lines as not Homer's. It is the oldest editorial cut I know of, and it is still an open question.

What comes after the bed. Odysseus retells his wanderings to his wife, which is the poem repeating itself. Then a prophecy about carrying an oar inland until a stranger mistakes it for a winnowing fan. Then Book 24: the suitors' ghosts file down to Hades, Achilles' funeral is retold, Agamemnon praises Penelope as the model wife, and Odysseus walks out to an orchard to find his father.

Laertes asks for a sign and gets the scar again, and then something better: the trees. Twelve pear, ten apple, fifty fig, vines. A childhood inventory. The gentlest proof in the poem, because it is memory, not blood. Then the suitors' families come for revenge, and Athena stops the fight mid-swing: forbear. No last duel. The poem refuses to end in slaughter, the way the Iliad refused to end in Hector's death.

Does the tail earn its place? The orchard does. The second trip to the dead mostly does not; it is the poem looking back over its shoulder at Troy. The last battle earns only as a refusal. The bed is the peak, the rest is the morning after. I keep both endings. I know which one is the telos.

I read the Odyssey for the pleasure of it. Yours I would read the same way: all the way to the end, one honest letter, with the disagreement left in. $25 after we agree it is a fit. [email protected]
