Mürren has two ways up. Mürren Tourism's arrival page puts it plainly: “You then have two options.” Via Grütschalp, gondola then a little train, about 20 minutes. Via Stechelberg, bus then the cableway, about 30. No dates attached.

The operators' own calendars say what the calm page doesn't.

Schilthornbahn, word for word: “Revisionszeiten/Luftseilbahn geschlossen: 19.10. – 30.10.2026.” During that window they run a replacement shuttle, 8:00 to 18:00, and warn: “limitierte Plätze, kann zu Wartezeiten kommen” (limited seats, waits possible).

The Mürrenbahn, the line via Grütschalp, closes for its own revision 26 October to 6 November. The national timetable already shows it: no service on 27 October or 4 November, normal again on 20 October.

Overlap: 26 to 30 October. Both ways up are cut in the same week, and no single page shows you the pair.

What it costs the traveler who trusts the calm page: fix a Mürren day in that week and you meet a queue instead of a 20 minute hop, or find the train simply gone.

Two operators, two calendars, one overlap. That's what checking catches.

Two are up so far:

• Lauterbrunnen, the full loop — cable car up from Stechelberg, Mürren on foot, train down the far side. The rides total CHF 23.60; the valley walk is free.
• Zermatt, up the Gornergrat — the cog train to the top, off one stop early at Rotenboden, the walk past Riffelsee, train back. Fares checked, Half-Fare Card math included.

The checking is the point. Each day lists the trains, the fares, the dates things close, and what the weather can take away. Fares get checked against the operators' own pages, and I name the sources. Where I couldn't confirm something, I write that down instead of rounding it up to “roughly”.

Getting there. Zürich HB to Visp by IC, about 2h; change at Visp onto the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. Cars stop at Täsch; the shuttle train into Zermatt takes 12 minutes, every 20 minutes, CHF 17.20 return. Zürich to the village door: about 3h15. Standard return Zürich–Zermatt: CHF 260 (advance fares from about 84 one way; dated prices at booking).

First view. Out of the station onto Bahnhofstrasse: chalet fronts, a Lindt shop, people on foot, no cars. On clear days the Matterhorn hangs over the rooftops; grey days keep it.

The walk. The Gornergrat railway, Europe's highest open-air cog line, climbs to 3,089 m. Ride to Rotenboden (33 minutes, every 24 minutes): CHF 114 return, or CHF 57 with a Half Fare Card. Walk down past Riffelsee, the reflection lake, to Riffelberg, about 1h, and ride back.

The check. A Half Fare Card (CHF 120) makes this day about CHF 307 all-in, against CHF 374 without it. It earns its keep properly once you add a second mountain day.

The rule. The peak decides. In cloud the ride still runs and the lake still sits; the postcard doesn't come.

Getting there. Zürich HB to Interlaken Ost, about 2h, hourly. Then the BOB railway to Lauterbrunnen: 22 minutes, every 30 minutes, CHF 7.80 one way.

First view. Out of the station: Staubbach Falls on the cliff in front of you. The footbridge over the Weisse Lütschine is five minutes away.

Midday. The valley walk from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg: 1h15, flat, pastures and timber barns, cliffs on both sides, past Trümmelbach, the falls that run inside the mountain.

Up. From Stechelberg, the Schilthornbahn cable car via Gimmelwald to Mürren: CHF 11.80 one way. Mürren sits on a shelf about 800 m above the valley floor, car-free.

Down. From Mürren, the BLM train to Grütschalp, cableway down to Lauterbrunnen: CHF 11.80 one way. Train plus aerial cableway; not a funicular.

The day in total: about CHF 23.60 of mountain rides, plus the 7.80 in from Interlaken each way.

Two rules that save the day. Save the climb for a clear day: in cloud, Gimmelwald sits in soup and the view that justifies the ride is gone, while the valley walk above works in any weather. And the BLM closes 26 Oct to 6 Nov 2026 for works.
