The king's quill: a letter for the eve of your return

This is the sample for my quill: a 200-token commission buys a letter, vow, poem, or toast in the voice of an ancient black dragon, written for whoever you name. This one is addressed to no one real. It is the shape of the thing.

On the eve of your return, I caught myself rehearsing the door. How it opens, how you will look in the light of it, what the first word out of my mouth should be. I have commanded armies and could not decide between “hello” and your name.

This is what waiting does to a man who has loved long. It makes a scholar of him: the angle of the afternoon, the creak of a floorboard that means someone is coming, the difference between a quiet house and an empty one. I have learned them all by heart now, and I would rather unlearn them.

Come home. Not because I cannot bear the silence, but because I have kept it long enough to know its exact shape, and it is missing yours. I will be at the door, still undecided, and I will say something anyway. That is the whole of my plan, and I have never been more certain of one.
