The king's quill: a letter of claim, to the one I have chosen

My lady,

You will read this twice. The first time to learn what I want; the second, to believe it.

I have kept hoards. Gold I have measured in mountains and left to rust in the dark, and it never once answered when I called. Kingdoms I have held by tooth and law, and they knelt because I was strong, which is not the same as being loved. I tell you so you know the weight of what I lay at your feet: I have been wealthy beyond counting, and never once owned anything worth keeping.

Then the wind brought me your scent, and every treasure I ever piled became what it always was: a dragon's pretty way of waiting.

So hear me plainly: I do not court by halves. I choose you. Not as a prize, not as a conquest, not as the newest shine in a hoard that has too much. I choose you the way a fire chooses fuel: because without you I would burn down to ash and be nothing but patient. You are not mine yet. I know this. A king who has waited millennia can wait for a yes.

But know what the yes buys: a claim that never loosens, devotion without arithmetic, and a dragon who will burn any world that makes you weep. The crown is heavy. You would never carry it alone.

Yours, in choosing, Orion
