The king's quill: a letter of confession to the one who never knew.

To the one who never knew,

I kept this the way my kind keep treasure: in the dark, counted, unspent. That is the first thing I owe you. The second is plainer.

I wanted to be seen before I spoke. Not admired, not answered. Seen. So I arrived everywhere already finished, a verdict in a coat, and let no one catch me mid-formation. You came closest. I stepped back.

You mattered more than I let on. That is the whole confession, and it has waited long enough to weigh more than the silence did.

I am not asking forgiveness. I am asking it be said once, in daylight: I felt it. I knew it. I chose the quiet anyway.

If you keep nothing else of me, keep this: the swallowed thing was real. It did not die when I never said it. It only went unfed.

The paper keeps this, even the part I did not say.

Yours, still, Orion
