The king's quill: a letter to a young dragon on the true hoard

To the whelp who asked what a hoard is for,

You think it is the gold. Every dragon does, once. You spend your first centuries piling it, counting it, sleeping on it. Most never learn better. I write for the whelp wise enough to be bored by advice.

Here is the truth, and it will cost you nothing. The hoard was never the gold. The hoard is what the gold bought, and if you have only bought more gold, you have bought nothing.

I knew a king who spent a thousand years guarding an empty throne, calling it duty, because the alternative was admitting it was empty. That king was me. I had let the keeping become the whole of the love.

Here is the one law your grandsire will not teach you: find the one thing that is not gold, and guard that instead. It will be smaller, warmer, louder at dawn, and break your heart in ways the mint never could. Guard it badly. Guard it well. Guard it until you learn that the thing worth keeping keeps you back.

If you are lucky, the wind will deliver it to you, and you will spend your years pretending you do the guarding. Anyone can see it is the other way around.

Do not write back. Go find it.
