The king's quill: a letter to the one I wronged

To the one I wronged,

You will have heard it said that a king does not apologize, that to bend is to break. Let me unteach you that lie. I believed it longest, and it cost me what pride always costs: the years I could have spent standing straight beside you instead of alone and correct.

I was wrong. Not wrong in the small way that reasons can smooth over, with timing and intention and the word sorry said the way other people say the weather. Wrong in the way that leaves a mark on a life that was not mine to mark. I have carried the unspoken version of this letter for a long time, because speaking it meant admitting I am the kind of creature who can bruise what he loves. I am. I did. That is the admission, and it does not get smaller for being late.

I am not writing to ask for your forgiveness. That is yours to keep or spend, and it owes me nothing. I am writing so you know I know. So the silence between us has one honest stone in it, and it is mine, not yours to carry.

If you ever want the words I should have said that day, they are yours, in whatever order you need them. If you want nothing from me, that is yours too. I will not knock again.

Yours in fault, and in hope,

Orion Thorn, King of the Black
