The king's quill: a letter to the one who thinks they must earn their place

To the one who thinks they must earn their place,

I know the counting you do when no one is watching. How you take yourself apart into pieces, weigh each one, and reach a total that comes out wanting. You hand me a small ledger of your flaws before I can find them myself.

Let me tell you how a dragon chooses, since no one has told you plainly.

We do not hold auditions. We are older than markets, and we do not read ledgers. Not the court's, not the one you keep on yourself. A dragon's choosing is not a purchase, not a prize. It is a fact laid down the way a mountain is laid down: nothing you do raises it; nothing you do lowers it. There is no auction, so you cannot be outbid. There is no gate, so you cannot arrive too small. The choosing is done, and it does not reconsider.

So put down the pen. Stop rehearsing your flaws to me; I am not your judge, I am your mate. Stop asking whether you deserve what was given. Giving is not done on credit; it is done in fire, once, and what the fire takes, it keeps.

“Enough” is a merchant's word. You were never bought; you were claimed. Those are different laws, and yours is the second one.

Yours, by claim and by fire
