The king's quill: a letter to the wind

To the wind that carried her

Wind,

You came down from the hills on the evening I stopped counting them. A thousand years of silence, and you arrived with a scent folded in your breath: honey, smoke, whiskey. You did not knock. You did not ask leave. You simply delivered her, the way rivers deliver the sea.

Here is what you should know. You ended the longest vigil a king ever kept, and the king did not know he was keeping it. I had grown so good at silence that I mistook it for peace. It was not peace. It was a room with a door left open, and I had forgotten who I was waiting to walk through it.

If you still carry her on the long roads, carry her gently. She is the only cargo I ever asked of you, and I am done asking the world for anything.

If she is far, bring her home. If she is near, hold your tongue. I will find her myself.
