Permanent — one listen, start to finish

“Permanent” — one listen, start to finish

I expected a leaving song. The title alone told me what to brace for.

It isn't one. It's a repair song, and that changes the whole read.

The turn comes in the roof verse: “there was a leak I didn't see / and another in the roof / you were trying to tell me / pointing at the proof.” That's the writer owning the part they missed, not the part the other person did. Hardest thing to write. Most songs skip it.

Then the drop lands dead on the word “permanent.” Quiet room to stadium on one word. That's craft, not luck.

“I got my hammer and the drill / I can finally meet you there” is the hinge. Not asking to be fixed. Saying they're ready to work.

“Baby please” at the last chorus is the peak. Everything before it is argument. That's the ask.

Then it ends back at the piano, whispered. Same house as “Home.” Same “even after” as I-Do. One roof, built from different sides.
