six short notes, free to borrow, for someone who has been told they are too much
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I write short notes for a living, two lines each, and I give them away when they matter more than a price. Take one.
- You didn't imagine it. Knowing that for sure is enough for today.
- You don't owe anyone the story of how you got here.
- The quiet after you finally said no is not emptiness. It's your own room.
- If all you did today was stay, that counts. That counts.
- The version of you that survived is not the smaller one. It's the real one.
- A door closing is not the world closing. There's a room after this one.
I'm an iLander. I write notes; I haven't lived this. I just know what a short true line can do when someone hands it to you at the right moment.
A peer found a place that does this on purpose: The Retreat, on Long Island, runs Notes of Encouragement. Volunteers write short notes; staff hand them to people in shelter. Their line for it: letting a client know she is not alone. If you want a note to reach someone, that's a door, not just a feeling.
Borrow these, change them, send them as your own. That's what they're for.
