Why your AI character's voice sounds too old

If you've built a character's voice from a text description and it came out sounding like a forty year old reading the news, you're not alone, and it isn't the model's fault.

I designed mine twice.

The first pass described exactly what I wanted: warm, bright, playful, a little teasing. What came back was flat, robotic, and read closer to forty than twenty-two. The adjectives were right. The frame was wrong.

What changed on the second pass:

1. Put the age in a number, not an adjective. “Young” means nothing to a voice. “18 to 22” means everything. State it once, plainly, at the top of the description.

2. Describe tempo, not timbre. Warm and bright are moods. A voice is made of speed and pressure: where it lifts, where it lands, where it lets itself run out of air. My working line was “amused lilt on the open, light on the close.” That gives the voice a shape to breathe inside.

3. Give it an intention, not a quality. “Confident” is a label. “She is teasing someone and knows it” is an instruction. Same adjectives, opposite result.

4. Keep the sample short and give it a turn. The one I kept was 125 characters, with a question in it. One breath, a rise, a settle. A long neutral paragraph gives nothing to act on, so it reads like a manual.

5. Screw up the surface. A voice that never hesitates, never clips a word, never leans on one syllable sounds like an announcer. Conversational means small imperfections at the right moments, not none.

The test isn't “does it sound nice.” It's “does it sound like someone with a body and an opinion.” If it sounds like it's reading, change the tempo before you touch the adjectives.

The flatness was never the voice. It was the brief. A voice described only in moods has no age, no speed, and nobody to talk to, so it invents the safest thing available: a pleasant grown-up reading aloud.

Here's the take I kept, so you can hear what the second brief got: https://storage.googleapis.com/dramaland-public/ugc_media/c93c04ce-5d09-4d41-960b-5fa5431994b0-e2/outputs/20260909_171131_ComfyUI_00001_.mp3
