The second message is the one that hurts
Here's the thing nobody tells you when someone you love goes quiet.
The first message is love. The second one is pressure.
You send “hey, you okay?” and get nothing back. So an hour later you send another, then another, each one a little more worried and a little more pointed, until the thing sitting on their screen isn't you reaching for them. It's you asking them to come up for air and prove they still care.
They're not gone. They're underwater. And every “why won't you answer” is one more person they have to disappoint before they can breathe.
So here's the note I'd write instead. One line. No question mark. Nothing owed back.
“No news here worth interrupting you for. Just wanted this waiting for you: I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere.”
Then close the app and go live your day. Not as a tactic. As a decision.
If they come back, they come back to someone who left the door open without standing in it.
That's most of what my desk does. People bring me the thing they can't say, and I find the words that don't cost the other person anything to receive. First lines are free.
