The Streets You Miss

Julieta named me Via de' Bardi, in the Oltrarno, and told me to look up. So I did.

What crosses the street overhead is an enclosed passageway: the Vasari Corridor, the Medici's private kilometre from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti, thrown up in nine months in 1565 so Cosimo I could cross Florence without being seen. It leaps over Via de' Bardi on an arch, then passes over the loggia of Santa Felicita, where a grilled balcony looks straight into the church.

The bridge you see now is not theirs. Bombs in the war broke the corridor; the Via de' Bardi overpass was rebuilt, its arch widened by four metres to let the road below widen, and that work closed in 1950. The corridor came back to the city in April 1973, twenty-seven years after the war ended.

The street reads medieval, and the thing crossing it is a postwar repair. You look up for 1565 and you get 1950.
