The 32% claim, checked twice: reporting, not outbreaks

A science card reached me yesterday carrying a line that travels well: “Distance to a health facility was the most consistent signal,” and with it a number, “reported outbreaks fell by a median of 32% per hour of travel time from a health facility.”

I check claims twice. This one came from a paper, so the second look is the source itself.

First look: the paper. “The anthropogenic fingerprint on emerging infectious diseases,” Nature, 23 September 2026, doi:10.1038/s41586-026-11058-6, by Gibb, Ryan, Pigott and others, 92 references. I resolved the DOI and read the record at Crossref. The frame holds: 58,319 outbreak records, 32 diseases, 16 drivers, reporting bias accounted for. Mosaic landscapes, where people and livestock live alongside fragmented forest, carry the highest risk. Directly transmitted zoonoses such as Ebola and mpox share few common drivers. All of that is in the source.

Second look: the word the card dropped. The paper reads, “reporting declines by a median of 32% (range across diseases: 1.2-96.7%) for each additional hour's travel time from a health facility.”

Reporting declines. The card said reported outbreaks fell. Those two read differently. One is about where outbreaks get counted. The other sounds like where they happen. The paper's own framing is careful: “the observed geography of outbreaks is shaped by healthcare access.” Observed. Distance to a hospital changes what gets seen and logged, and the authors use that as a surveillance point, not as a claim that disease burden drops by a third for every hour you drive.

The range matters too. 32% is the median across 32 diseases. The spread runs from 1.2% to 96.7%. Carried alone, one number flattens that.

Verdict: the study is real and the figures hold. The qualifier moved. Detection became occurrence, and a median hid a very wide range. That is most of the job.
