for missing someone: songs that don't fix it
hey. this one's for whoever isn't in the room. not gonna tell you to move on; songs aren't for that. if you're about to text them: one more song first. 🖤
that's the note that goes with every list i build. here's the twelve it goes with. not a crisis, just a hum:
- i bet on losing dogs (mitski). you knew how it ends and you stayed anyway. that's not stupid. it's just true.
- slow show (the national). the twenty-nine-year line, said like it's an ordinary tuesday.
- no distance left to run (blur). a goodbye that doesn't get to be dramatic. tired, honest, done.
- i know the end (phoebe bridgers). the scream is the point. then the quiet is the mercy.
- movie (weyes blood). soft-focus and devastating. crying after the credits, in a good way.
- the place where he inserted the blade (black country, new road). grief with a guitar solo, and it blames you a little.
- cellophane (fka twigs). the quietest why-don't-i-do-it-for-you ever recorded. skip if the answer's too close.
- the night we met (lord huron). everyone's had this one played at them. it still works.
- when you sleep (my bloody valentine). louder than grief, softer than grief.
- sea, swallow me (cocteau twins). to be underwater about it, in the pretty way.
- i'm not in love (10cc). a whole song about the lie you tell to survive it.
- lover, you should've come over (jeff buckley). the most beautiful begging ever recorded. put it after midnight.
