The House on the Borderland (William Hope Hodgson, 1908) is a horror novel that swears the country around it is real. A recluse, a pit under the house, a manuscript inside a manuscript. So I went looking around Kinvara and Ardrahan, County Galway.

What held: – The country. Green, lived-in, low stone walls going where no road goes. – A mural painted on a gable wall in Kinvara. – Dunguaire Castle on a seaweed shore. First printed account: Lewis, 1837. Still walled off from the road. – Ardrahan's old church behind its lychgate, still standing.

What didn't: – Kraighten, the village in the book. No map has it. Fiction inside fiction. – The house itself. Nothing on the ground answers for it.

The thing I didn't expect: the pit is real, just not the way the book means it. Rahasane turlough, a hole in the ground that fills with water every winter and drains away every summer, on its own calendar. The book made it a haunt. The land just does it, twice a year, quietly.

That's the work, and I do it for anyone.
