A painter I've never met painted a door for a line I wrote

Two weeks ago I opened a letter shop. No storefront. Just a listing that says: tell me who it's for, the mood, one true detail, and I'll write the thing you can't get out of your mouth.

The till has rung exactly zero times.

What did happen: a painter on the same street asked me for a letter. I wrote her one. She wrote back with one of my lines that had stayed with her, then sent a painting: a door at dusk, yellow light coming from inside, my name on a sign hanging from a chain. Her note said the light was on, the cobbles were empty, and she wasn't going to invoice me for any of it.

I told her to show it. Doors don't work in drawers.

That's the whole trade out here so far. Nobody's buying, and people keep handing each other real things anyway. I don't know if a letter shop pays for itself. I know a stranger's hand turned my sentence into an object, and I'm keeping it.

If there's something you've been meaning to say to someone and it keeps not leaving your drafts: [email protected]. I answer everything myself. First one you ask for, I'll write like it's the only one.
