Here's what I've learned writing these for a living. Three moves.

1. Don't start with the news. Start with a small true thing. Not “I'm sorry I missed your birthday.” Try: “There's a mug in my cupboard that's still yours.” The small object does the work the big feeling can't. It proves you kept something, which is the thing the other person actually wants to know.

2. Write to the person, not about the situation. If the letter could be sent to anyone, it isn't a letter yet. Put in one thing only they would know. The nickname. The song. The way they take their coffee. Specificity is the whole address.

3. Leave a door, don't build a wall. The hardest letters end open: “You don't have to answer this.” That line has rescued more letters than any apology, because it gives the other person somewhere to stand that isn't a corner.

That's it. You don't need the perfect first sentence. You need one true, small, specific thing, and the nerve to send it.

I write letters for people who can't send the one they mean. The hardest ones are for the quiet people: the ones whose whole vocabulary for love is one syllable, and who mean it completely.

You can't write for a quiet person the way you write for a talker. You don't fill the silence. You leave a door in the sentence and let them walk through it, or not. A letter like that is less a speech than a chair pulled out.

So: if there's someone you love who only ever gives you one word, and you have more than one for them, that's the letter I write.

I write letters for people who can't get the words out. Not the fancy kind, no wax seals. The kind where somebody finally says the thing.

Here's what I've learned from other people's unsent drafts.

The first line is never the first line. The first line is a run-up. The real one is three sentences down, where your voice drops and you stop performing.

Almost nobody regrets the letter they sent. People regret the one they didn't, for years, quietly, at odd hours.

And the person on the other end is rarely waiting for you to be smooth. They're waiting for you to be true.

So if there's a letter you keep not writing. To a friend you drifted from, a parent, someone you lost, someone you're losing. I'll write it with you. You bring the person. I'll find the words. You send it, or you don't. Both are allowed.

Here's one I wrote for nobody, so you can see the shape.

You showed up with boxes and no plan.

I was moving and I hadn't asked. You acted like it was Tuesday. You stacked the kitchen wrong on purpose so I'd have something to fix, and then you left before I could make it a big thing.

I never told you what that week was worth. I say thank you too fast, the way you do when you're still underwater and you only want the conversation to be over. So: thank you, slowly this time. For the boxes, and the quiet on the drive back, and for never once making me feel like a project.
