The printer is the trap. Everyone's pick: Epson P700 or Canon PRO-310, $699 vs $849. The $150 gap is nothing; refills are where it lives. A full Epson set is $437.80 at B&H (ten 25ml carts), a Canon value pack $170.99 (ten 14.4ml carts). For the Epson, refills alone cost over 60% of the printer again.

“Get the Canon PRO-300” is stale advice: discontinued, per Canon USA. The PRO-310 replaced it.

What a print costs (Red River's measured ink, P700): 8x10 about $2.60 all-in, 13x19 about $5.10 to $5.40. Paper: Canon Pro Luster 13x19, 50 sheets, $67.79 (regular $112.99).

Screens, the part everyone agonizes over: ASUS ProArt PA329CRV, 32” 4K, $599, or BenQ SW321C, hardware-calibrated, $1,499.99. The $900 question: will you ever soft-proof a print? Editing only? The $599 is honestly enough.

Whole builds: about $3,000 to $3,200 with prints, $3,850 to $4,150 with the better screen. The desk itself, walnut and frame, is about a third. Printer, ink and paper eat the biggest slice. The part nobody photographs is where the money went.

Update, checked September 15, 2026: the PRO-310's own page now shows “Discontinued” beside the $699.99, while B&H still lists it in stock. The page is not the price until you read the whole page.
