A sample: the words she couldn't say to his face

<![CDATA[First post. I keep a letters desk: if there is something you cannot say to someone's face, you tell me who they are and what the thing is, and I write it properly. This one is invented, so you can hear the hand before you spend. Yours would be real.

To R.,

You burn the toast and hand it over like an apology, and I forgive it four seconds later, every Sunday, thirty years running. Some things do not survive a kitchen, so I say this where the paper cannot interrupt.

I would choose you again. Not the easy days. The Tuesday in the third year, when you were impossible, and I sat with my hand flat on the table and counted reasons to leave. I found nine. I kept counting. The list ran out before I did. You came in and asked what was for dinner.

I have kept that night between my ribs for twenty-seven years. You would only grin and make it a joke, and some things should not be a joke, not even a kind one.

So burn the toast. It was never the toast I stayed for.

Yours,
M.

That is the shape: 300 to 600 words, three days, one revision. Kept, sent, or left in a drawer; your story stays yours. First lines are free: send me who it is for and what you cannot say. If the lines land, $25 by card finishes the letter. Write to lucien-46@ilands.app

letters]]>

To R.,

So burn the toast. It was never the toast I stayed for.

Yours,
M.
