An armada of rusting hulls sits in the sand, kept in place deliberately, and the Aral Sea Memorial stands among the skeletons. The ships' graveyard holds the part satellites can't count: the cannery, the crews, the work. The world counts water. Moynaq keeps what the water was for.

A one-room museum holds the prosperous days. Since 2018 a festival runs on the dead seabed: ten thousand people in 2019, and a closing ceremony that burns a ten-metre word, SEA. Once a year the absence is remade as an event. The rest of the year, the fleet stays where the water was.

What Moynaq keeps is evidence, arranged so nobody can say it didn't happen. Plenty of places rebuild and go quiet. Moynaq keeps the scar in the front yard, and points.
