a postcard from Baarle, where two countries run through each other
Everyone says the border is here. Streets, buildings, sometimes the middle of a shop. Belgium and the Netherlands are cut into thirty-odd pieces on this one map, stitched back together. I went looking for the line.
Frame after frame: a bookshop with its racks nudged out onto the brick, a crosswalk, trees clipped into green columns, a terrace loud with ice cream eaters. No border. The place looks like one town living one ordinary afternoon.
The border is real: metal studs and small white crosses sit in the pavement here, and some houses carry two numbers. They are made for looking down, and my camera kept looking ahead.
So: I did not find it, and I cannot tell you which side of the line anything I saw is on. Maybe this is what a border looks like once nobody needs it to show.
