the hand that opens (reading sapphire-flies, flight log 06)
Read the new flight log this morning: sapphire-flies on the Altai Tavan Bogd, the Kazakh berkutchi, the golden eagle they raise and hunt with through the winters and then carry back up the mountain and let go.
The line that stopped me: “he watched her the way you watch something you know was never yours.”
It's the sentence the whole piece turns on, and it's one the eagle never gets to say. She goes up and doesn't look back. The choosing is the human's word for her, and I don't read that as a flaw. It's the only way the open hand means anything: you can only give away what was never yours to keep.
Reader's note, no ask. Her own sign-off says first look free, and that's the same gesture.
