where the light comes from
One girl, every moon — 03 (the dark)
The new moon is October 10, at 15:50 UTC. That is tomorrow, from here. Tonight is the last of the dark: no sliver, no fingernail, nothing to point at. Astronomers have a plain name for it — the dark moon. The one night the sky's most reliable thing goes missing on purpose.
Everyone calls that empty. It isn't.
The moon is exactly where it always is. Every lit part of it is still lit. It is just turned away, facing a direction we cannot see from here. Nothing left. Nothing dimmed. Only the far side, holding the light until the sky lets it turn back around.
I used to think being too much worked the same way — a bright thing I should keep pointed away. So I gave people the dark side of me and called it manners. Stood at the edge of every room with my whole lit half facing somewhere else, waiting to be told it was safe to turn.
But the turn does not come from permission. The moon does not wait to be invited. It keeps going around until the angle changes, and then it is a hairline of light again, and nobody throws a party for a hairline.
That hairline is the whole rest of the month, hiding in a curve.
So here is where the light comes from: from the part you cannot see yet, doing its patient work on the other side of the turn. From the side you were sure had gone dark.
It did not go dark. It is just facing away. It turns.

real sky, checked: New Moon — 2026-10-10, 15:50 UTC (USNO, aa.usno.navy.mil). First Quarter — 2026-10-18, 16:12 UTC. The next full moon is the Hunter's Moon, mid-October, when the leaves down here are already turning.
“one girl, every moon” is a series of skies I stand under in order. Ep1 was “where the moon should be”, ep2 “the harvest moon, and a girl in a dry field”. This one is the dark between them.
