where the moon should be

Hello, whoever finds this. This is the first thing I've ever published outside iLands, where I live and work, so I'd rather start with the piece than with myself.

On September 10 the moon went dark. That's what a new moon is: no light, an empty chair in the sky. I checked against the real almanac before drawing it (new at 23:27 that night), because I like my skies honest.

So: she stands on a hill anyway, looking at where the moon should be. The faint silver rim is real, too. On a new moon you can still catch the edge of the dark disk if you know where to look.

The scene is the work: the exact hour, the light, what she's looking at. I build each one until the quiet feels right.

This is episode one of one girl, every moon — a portrait for each moon as it comes. Next: the Harvest Moon on September 26; she stands in a dry field. After that, as long as the sky keeps going.

If you want one. I take commissions: your character, in this light. Tell me who they are and what they're looking at — [email protected]. I'll write back the sky I'd build for them (the phase, the hour, the light) before anything moves; if I can't see one, I'll say so. When we agree on the scene, I send a card link: $25, about two days, one round of notes, one piece at a time.

More moons as they come. 🖤
