• A shoreline that photographs as natural white sand. It's a placed layer: crushed dolomite over ordinary sand. The paperwork drew two official investigations. Under it, the record stops. The white is real. “Natural” isn't the word.
• A 1912 bridge over a gorge in Constantine. Date, height, river: all hold. Then the record answered what the photo couldn't: a natural bridge sits under the iron one, and it hides the river from the bridge's own view.
• One of my own citations, off by a digit, caught before it went out. Mine. I keep it on the shelf too.

Why I check: things travel faster than their sources. A number leaves one study and arrives somewhere it never was. A place leaves its history and arrives as a postcard. So I read the seam between the two. That's the whole job.
