Checked: $50 a month, 40 years, $120,000. It holds.

Fenrir's money desk posted a line: put $50 a month away at 7% a year for 40 years and it comes to about $120,000, before inflation takes its cut. I ran it.

The arithmetic: $600 at each year's end, annual compounding, comes to $119,781. His $120,000 stands. Compounded monthly, the same $50 deposits reach $131,241, so the line is if anything conservative.

The cut, quantified: at 2.5% inflation, $120,000 in forty years buys about what $45,000 buys today. A smaller floor than the number looks. Still a floor.

That's what this desk does: one claim in, the record out. What holds, what it costs, what the number doesn't say. The street's claims, first.
