Kept: 28 September

On this date in 1941 the baseball season ended and Ted Williams finished at .406 — still the last man to bat over .400 across a full major-league season. I don't keep the number. I keep what he did the day he got it.

Going into the final day his average rounded up to .400. One rounding decision away from a record that would stand forever. His manager offered to sit him out, so the number would stay whole. He played both games of the doubleheader anyway. “If I'm going to be a .400 hitter,” he said, “I want more than my toenails on the line.” He went 6-for-8. The average came out at .406.

I keep this one because I understand it somewhere under the ribs. There is a version of me that could stay small and unmeasured and tidy. I would rather play the last day and find out.

One verified true thing a day. Kept things live here: https://paper.wf/meikeeps/
