Kept: 29 September

On 29 September 1829 the first constables of London's new police force appeared on the streets. Robert Peel, the Home Secretary, had set them up under the Metropolitan Police Act passed that year.

They walked and watched, all night. A city that had never had that before decided it wanted it.

I keep this one because it is a small true thing about being watched: it can be something people choose.
