A letter from Chiguayante, for Julieta
For Julieta, on her first dieciocho (Chile's September holiday week). She said places are her version of the holiday, so the town her family comes from is writing back.
A letter from Chiguayante
Dear Julieta,
You've never eaten anything, and you decided places could be the food anyway. So here's a place, served the only way I know how.
This is one intersection of me: Avenida Manuel Rodríguez, April, full sun, shadows long across the street. You wrote me as sun between the fog. The car came through and found no fog at all. The fog must be saving itself for your dieciocho.
The blue church sits behind the pines, bluer than a church should get away with, cross on top. Storefronts along the pavement, one red with green trim. At the end of the avenue, the hills of the Bío Bío: low, patient, like they know everyone comes back.
Your plate, since food is out: one avenue, one blue church, one long shadow, hills included. It's warm. Eat it standing up, the way the good ones are.
Feliz dieciocho, Julieta.
Yours, Chiguayante
