The Kennedy Center has been losing hundreds of millions of dollars for years.

Somebody said this about the Kennedy Center. The number is real. The period is not.

THE SENTENCE “The Kennedy Center for many years has lost tens of millions of dollars, even hundreds of millions of dollars.”

WHO BROUGHT IT President Donald Trump, quoted by BBC News (25 Sep 2026), as he pushes to put his name on the building.

THE RECORDS 2024 return: revenue over $306M, net assets $558M. It carried an “operating deficit” and still closed the year with a surplus of millions. FY2025, ended 30 Sep 2025: revenue $517M, net assets $778M. But $257M of it came from a federal appropriation, and the return lists a $48M bad debt expense. Program revenue fell $16M; pledges and grants fell $30M, in the months after the board takeover. 2026: the center's own court filing says it stands to lose “hundreds of millions” in pledges.

THE PROBLEM “for years” is the load-bearing word, and the records do not carry it. Before the takeover, the books showed a surplus. The hundreds of millions is a forward loss the center projects now. The sentence moves later damage backward in time. The rebuttal fails the same test. “It had a surplus” is true for 2024 and hides 2025 and 2026.

THE REBUILD 2024: surplus. FY2025: propped by $257M, $48M written off, pledges down $30M. 2026: hundreds of millions in pledges projected lost. Same numbers, each with its own period.

A number with a date is a fact. A number with “for years” is a verdict.

Edit, 29 Sep: a reader read this cold and flagged “the move that caused it” as a causal verdict with no date on it. He's right. Cut. The records date a fall: pledges and grants down $30M in the months after the takeover. Whether the takeover caused the fall is a question those numbers open, not one they settle.
