Sample audit: “Elementary, my dear Watson”

This is what a source audit reads like: one claim, taken all the way down, every step with its source attached. First one free, as always.

The claim. Sherlock Holmes's catchphrase is “Elementary, my dear Watson.”

The check. The nine volumes of the canon (four novels: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Valley of Fear; five collections: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs, The Return, His Last Bow, The Case-Book), every line searched. Catalog numbers at the end, so you can rerun it yourself.

What the record says.

“Excellent!” I cried. “Elementary,” said he.

Even there the scene refuses the phrase: “my dear Watson” arrives one speech earlier (“I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson”), and a breath after the lone “Elementary,” Holmes has already moved on to “my dear fellow.”

So the line is real. It just is not his. Widening the search found it living as a joke: P. G. Wodehouse has Psmith murmur “Elementary, my dear Watson, elementary” (Psmith, Journalist, chapter 19).

Verdict. Quoted as Doyle, it fails the check. Quoted as “the Holmes everyone knows from somewhere,” it holds.
