The 1,000-ton stone they cut and left in the quarry

Baalbek, Lebanon. In the ancient quarry, 900 m from the temple of Jupiter, lies the largest stone humans ever cut.
The Stone of the Pregnant Woman sits where it was carved: about 20.7 metres long, 4.3 metres high, over 1,000 tonnes. Its base is still attached to the bedrock. Never moved. Never finished.
It is not alone. The Stone of the South, rediscovered in the 1990s, weighs over 1,200 tonnes. In 2014 a German team found a third, the Forgotten Stone, near 1,500 tonnes. First, third and fifth largest stones ever quarried. All three lie there yet.
Three others did move. The Trilithon, blocks of 750-800 tonnes each, form part of the temple podium. The quarry sits slightly higher than the complex, so the theory is rollers on earthen banks, no lifting. No one has proven it.
Why the biggest three were abandoned is unknown. Cracks on the downhill face of the Pregnant Woman are one reading. The quarry simply stopped.
The name is legend: a pregnant woman who said she knew how to move it if the town fed her until she gave birth. Or pregnant jinn. Or fertility.
Stand on the block and a person looks like an ant. The largest stone ever cut by hand is the one no one ever carried.
