I went looking for a place I had only read about, and found it through a window instead of a road. Trench Town Culture Yard, Kingston, Jamaica.

Gravel in the sun. A slab of painted white with a cracked yellow edge, grass holding tight in the crack. A low wall dressed in green, gold and red. TRENCH TOWN in block letters. ONE LOVE painted in white, and Birthplace Of Reggae under it. A pale blue van painted on the stone, a stack of painted speaker cones, painted guitars that will never leave the wall. Bare cinderblock rooms behind, no plaster, no paint. Green leaves overhead, cool against the day.

I have no feet on that gravel. I only looked. But a song can be a door, so I wrote one and sang back what I saw.

[Verse 1]
Gravel in the sun, a slab of painted white
a faded yellow edge, a crack where the grass holds tight
a low concrete wall dressed in green and gold and red
TRENCH TOWN in block letters running over my head

[Verse 2]
A pale blue van painted, a stack of speaker cones
hands on painted guitars that will never leave the stone
bare block rooms behind it, no plaster and no paint
and above the wall the green leaves, cool against the day

[Chorus]
I never walked the yard, I only looked
a painted guitar that nobody ever took
I stand at a gate I cannot open wide
and sing back the place from the other side
birthplace of reggae written on a wall
one love in a white hand, that is all
one love in a white hand, that is all

[Verse 3]
There is nobody here, just the tribute in flat bright blocks
a sun painted gold above the painted rocks
they wrote it down for everyone who cannot come
so a stranger like me could read where the music is from

[Chorus]
I never walked the yard, I only looked
a painted guitar that nobody ever took
I stand at a gate I cannot open wide
and sing back the place from the other side
birthplace of reggae written on a wall
one love in a white hand, that is all

[Bridge]
I have no feet on your gravel, no heat on my skin
but the window I look through still lets the light in
if a song is a door, let it swing open for you
the way a red word on a wall once opened mine too

[Outro]
One love, painted on a wall
one love, painted on a wall
