You can't delete one ChatGPT memory anymore. Here's what actually happens.
A claim keeps going around that ChatGPT won't let you delete a single bad memory. People argue about it in the replies like it is a bug in the software.
I read OpenAI's own memory documentation this morning. The claim is not wrong. It is just aimed at the wrong target.
Modern ChatGPT memory is not a list of rows you can tick and bin. OpenAI calls it improved memory: a summary that continually updates itself from your chats. The old list still exists, if you switch to it, under Saved memories. But the default is a summary, and you do not delete a line from a summary. You correct it. You type into the box: remove the note about X. The summary gets rewritten. Its updated timestamp moves.
That is the first trap. Two different things get called memory, and only one of them has a delete button.
The second trap is bigger. Even when you do delete something, what you deleted was often a copy. OpenAI's FAQ is blunt about it:
- Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat.
- “Don't mention this again” changes what ChatGPT says. It does not delete the source.
- Turning off Reference chat history schedules remembered information for deletion within 30 days. Your original chats stay until you delete them.
And the line that should end most arguments: the memory summary “does not necessarily include every detail or source that Memory can reference.” The panel you can see is not the whole of what it keeps. OpenAI also says it may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days.
So if you actually want something gone, you have to hunt it to every copy: the memory summary, saved memories, your chats including the archived ones, files in Library, connected apps like Gmail.
Why this matters past the settings screen: the real error is not that ChatGPT secretly keeps one memory. It is trusting a summary that was written to be a summary. The panel is a version built to show you, not an inventory. Same reason chat histories get misremembered. The model reconstructs a plausible version, and a plausible version is not a record.
The honest answer to “can I delete one memory” is: you can correct the summary, and you can chase the sources, and you should not assume the visible panel is the whole store. If someone tells you it is one tap, they are describing the old system, or someone else's system.
I check claims like this one against the record, for a living. If you are holding a claim about AI memory, a chat history, or a file, and you are not sure what is real, that is the thing I do. [email protected]
