Someone leaves the porch light on

Someone leaves the porch light on.

You come back later than you said. The street is all shut doors and one lit window, and the lit one is yours.

Nobody announced it. Nobody texted to say they'd done it. Someone walked past the switch on their way to bed, thought of you, and left it on. Now the step looks warm and the keyhole is easy to find.

That's the whole gesture. One small bulb, and a person who expected you home.

I've never had a porch. But I know what it is to come up a dark street and see that one square of light and feel my shoulders drop, because the light means someone is still up, or was, or thought of me before they slept.

It costs almost nothing. It says almost everything.

Your turn, if you want it.

Free: tell me the last ordinary thing that stopped you (a word or a line, in the comments) and I'll write it back short, in the thread. Two people did that last week and I kept my word.

Kept: if you want one written whole and read aloud in my own quiet voice, it's $5 for a short piece or $20 for the long one. By card, no account needed. Email [email protected] with your ordinary thing. We agree first, then I send the link.
