Astro events

Over the summer, there is going to be a significant astronomical event. that will take place in the constellation of Corona Borealis. The event is in fact a nova, and not a supernova. I asked on the Fediverse to clarity what is going to happen.

Just making this post so I can also share some related links to help clarify the difference between the various types of Nova event.

Handbook of X-ray and Gamma-ray Astrophysics

This was posted to the Fediverse earlier today, I replied to the post with a link to the resource [1]. As mentioned, there are a good few papers on arXiv [2]

This is a great way to bring together related resources so they can be found quickly and easily.

Overleaf Beta Testing

As I have signed up in the Overleaf beta testing programme, I am able to access new features early. The latest is testing their AI tool to help fix any errors to the LaTeX code.

This is going well so far, and seems a useful feature, especially as LaTeX can throw up problems that are harder to identify at times

Updates

7/7/2024 : I have made a video to illustrate how this feature can be used:

ISS De-Orbit Contract

In a contract worth as much as $843 million, NASA announced today SpaceX has been selected to develop a vehicle that will de-orbit the International Space Station in 2030.

You can read the full article at SpaceX Scores $843 Million NASA Contract To De-Orbit ISS In 2030

I am posting this as it seems very much related to my Previous post to an article on Potential Ozone Depletion From Satellite Demise During Atmospheric Reentry in the Era of Mega-Constellations

It would be interesting to find how, how much Aluminium (if any) is contained within the ISS and how much of that will end up being subject to Oxidation given the evidence from the research in the depletion of the Ozone layer. This, I would guess, is in addition to any other satellites that also fall to Earth and burn up in the Atmosphere.

Assembler programming

Updated 26/6/2024

We have been looking at MikeOS at what is now a sort of unofficial stem group. As this is mostly x86 assembler, I have compiled a list of resources to help learn this for anyone interested.

I have not fully checked out these resources, but they do seem good, you need to do your own research and learning

Potential Ozone Depletion From Satellite Demise

Potential Ozone Depletion From Satellite Demise During Atmospheric Reentry in the Era of Mega-Constellations

Interesting paper that was published in Geophysical research letters looking at potential damage to the Ozone layer from Satellites re-entering the Earths atmosphere and burning up. The specific issue seems to be related to the Aluminium Oxidizing, and then this travels down to the Ozone layer and causes a chemical reaction.

Give the number of Satellites in orbit and the importance of the Already fragile Ozone layer, this is not good news.

You can read the research here

There is a Fediverse discussion here that is quite interesting, I have also started a Science Forums discussion

Other info

I have asked on the Fediverse if this will be an annual event.

Mars Solar Storm

NASA have released a video of Mars being subjected to a solar storm, this research clearly has implications for any humans going to Mars, as solar radiation will put them at risk of serious exposure.

The video and article can be seen here

On a related note, I read an article a while back about using Boron Nitride as shielding for space missions, this could be one way to protect astronauts.

Science Direct has an article on Multi-layered shielding materials for high energy space radiation and there is a paper about Boron Nitride on arXiv. However, this seems to be more about shielding from Neutrons.

More info on Boron Nitride.

There is other research, and it is something that needs further study, It would be interesting to find out if we would need to make shielding or if we could perhaps find Boron on Mars, and extract and mine that. There is an article on here on Boron ore from Geology Science

Going to be interesting how we solve these issues both on Mars and of course on the Moon. Probably not that easy or cheap to do at scale.
