PDF to PNG conversion

If you have a single or multiple page pdf file, you may, want to share a page on a website or on social media. If you can't upload the pdf directly or need to upload in a graphics format. This how_to will explain how to export a page in PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format.

Firstly the steps were undertaken using:-

  • Debian Linux 10
  • GIMP 2.10.8

Step 1:

The first step is to Open the PDF file in Gimp.

open pdf in gimp

Step 2

The next step is to choose the page of the PDF file you wish to import.

Select Page

Step 2a

You will now see the page has been imported in to Gimp

Page imported

Step 3

Now go to File —> Export As

Export As As

Step 4

You then see the file type box.

file type

Step 4a

From here, delete the extension from the file name (as in the .png part) at the top, then select png from the select file type list at the bottom.

File type 2

Make sure the file type is selected

Select Export (bottom right

If you don't get any errors you should get the box below

Step 5

Export Options

I didn't want to set any options here so just went ahead and selected Export

After which the newly created png file is displayed

png file displayed

You can now go back and select other pages to export.

Hopefully this How_to is useful.

Thank you to Andrew at Boost Torbay for suggesting I use gimp or Photoshop to do this.

The #BoostTorbay chat runs every Friday from 8-9pm. A chat filled with laughs, a spot of networking and on occasion some serious stuff.

CPD Update – 10th July 2020

Just completed week 1 of Teaching Primary Science: Getting Started with FutureLearn

I intend to take this, along with a few other related courses aimed at supprting STEM in schools. Hopefully this will lead to paid employment Open to discussion directly with schools.

I seem to have quite a lot of STEM related knowledge e.g:

Chemistry Astronomy Electricity Digital logic Basic programming

So would really like to support STEM in schools.

Note: I will not get a certificate for this because I cannot afford it, so will just do the free route and link to my profile which should provide sufficient evidence of undertaking this.

Overleaf Webinar write up from 09/7/2020

I attended another Webinar presented by Overleaf, the cloud based, collaborative text editor.

This webinar focused on “Organizing and Managing your Overleaf Projects”.

Again really well presented and it covered project ownership, and the rights this gives you, e.g you can't rename a project that has been shared with you.

Also covered folders and tags, the differences between project archiving and deletion. Along with more about what is found on the dashboard, searching for projects for example. Well worth taking a look at in the previous webinar recordings.

In the meantime there is a TUG virtual conference near the end of July (24th –> 26th). Please see link below for details.

Next webinar

The next Webinar is on 30th July and will cover How to Create Professional Looking Documents In-House.

JioMeet

JioMeet is basically a completely free 1:1 copy of Zoom

Recent media reports point to some privacy / safeguarding concerns with regard to the popular video conferencing software – zoom.

I came across this recently, JioMeet is free clone of zoom. Look pretty interesting so am sharing here.

Writefull

Writefull is a plug-in for Google Chrome designed to complement the cloud based Overleaf LaTeX editor by facilitating the checking of your document for errors such as grammar and spelling.

You can read more about this here

This is a really valuable tool if you are involved in writing academic texts, as it designed for that level of text processing in mind. However it is a welcome tool if you're using Overleaf in general.

Galaxy Zoo

One of the projects that the recently completed OpenLearn course 'In the night sky : Orion' has inspired me to take a closer look at is Galaxy zoo. This is a citizen science project that everyone can get involved with.

I think the project just started out with asking people to identify galaxies from known features, e.g spiral, elliptical and help to classify objects from photos taken with Hubble and other instruments.

This is a really good project, and helps to bridge the gap between science and citizens. I spent some time last night looking at another part of this, which is to try and identify asteroids and asteroid trails, mostly from HST photos.

There are other projects on the website including

  • Earthquake detection
  • Muon detection
  • Watching Solar Storms
  • Hunting for Asteroids

It is quite challenging sometimes, trying to identify a specific item against a photo full of other objects. But then the challenge is part of the reason for doing this.
