Tech Pledge

The Tech Pledge a community written document with the intention of making the internet a better place for everyone.

It asks you to commit to the following.

  • to take responsibility for what I create.
  • to only help create things I would want my loved ones to use.
  • to pause to consider all consequences of my work, intended as well as unintended.
  • to invite and act on criticism, even when it is painful.
  • to ask for help when I am uncertain if my work serves my community.
  • to always put humans before business, and to stand up against pressure to do otherwise, even at my own risk.
  • to never tolerate design for addiction, deception or control.
  • to help others understand and discuss the power and challenges of technology
  • to participate in the democratic process of regulating technology, even though it is difficult.
  • to fight for democracy and human rights, and to improve the institutions that protect them.
  • to work towards a more equal, inclusive and sustainable future for us all, following the United Nations global goals.
  • to always take care of what I start, and to fix what we break.

You can sign this pledge digitally at The Tech Pledge.

You can download a pack from the website, which has a pdf version that you can sign and display in your office.

Lets make the internet a better place.

Adult filters – Compensation

A bbc report on 24th Jan 2020, covers the continuing problem of trying to protect young people from accessing adult material while using the Internet.

This scheme has been dropped, and the companies trying to develop the solution, spending millions, quite rightly want compensation.

This policy seems to have been doomed from the start, firstly it seems no one actually knows how to do this, the UK government also failed to inform the EU, so the implementation was delayed by six months, and industry experts were not convinced the policy would even work as users would find a way to circumvent the filters.

In addition to this, uploading of passports and other ID information raises serious privacy concerns.

There is wide acknowledgement something has to be done, but no one seems to have come up with a solution yet.

The solution(s) may have nothing to do with technology. It is about education, educate people properly on how to behave, how to treat others, equality and making everyone feel valued. This starts at home and is enforced in schools. Of course adults really need to set the example. Not sure how that is going to happen when you get vile trolling of people.

We have many laws, surely we need to start enforcing them. We should also hold parent / guardians responsible, perhaps the prospect of actual jail and a long term criminal record will result in action.

We need a gender diverse workforce in schools too, as that way we can have positive male AND female role models, Some schools hardly have any male staff, why is this, esp in 2020 when we are meant to have the equality act.

Another bbc article yesterday 25/2/2020 Facebook and YouTube moderators sign PTSD disclosure really does highlight the issue. Something is clearly NOT working,

LibreOffice Documentation

I found an article on Friendica announcing a guide for LibreOffice Calc 6.x (spreadsheet).

However further searching, I found a more useful page that links to guides for each of the various LibreOffice modules.

They are doing a really good job with all of this, great to see documentation for software too.

I posted about article 13 on my previous blog last year. There is now an update to this.

A BBC report on 24/1/2020 says that the UK government is not going to sign up to this. This is a victory for content providers and common sense.

To give some background to this previous BBC reports can be found here.

Lithium Extraction – the price

This was posted to Friendica today. I am sharing as it seems a really important discussion point.

On the one hand, we are being encouraged to buy electric cars, we are becoming more reliant on electronic devices. All of which use a power source which uses the Element Lithium, this has to come from somewhere, but what is the price.

Lithium Extraction for E-mobility Robs Chilean Communities of Water

“Before the mining companies arrived here, there was a lot of water. But mining has consumed the groundwater, the companies even take water from the river, so we farmers don't get the water we need any more.”

In the middle of the world's driest desert is a vast expanse of turquoise basins, each one like a colossal swimming pool, up to 20 times the size of a football field.

The pools are filled with a salty brine pumped up from ancient reservoirs under the desert. It also contains lithium carbonate, the raw material for a light, silvery metal that happens to be a component of the batteries now used by virtually all computers, phones and electric cars.

At first glance, Chile's Atacama Desert looks a barren, inhospitable place. Yet indigenous people and animals have long thrived there. Now locals says they're having to compete with the lithium industry for the desert's limited water resources.

Coyo is one of dozens of Likan-antai communities that live in the desert's small oases. The community takes turns to tap the San Pedro River water and after waiting for two weeks, today, Hugo Diaz can finally water his crops.

Makes an interesting discussion, we need to think about how we consume and where everything that goes in to this comes from. Lots of talk about where food comes from, even less discussion as to where other products come from, and like with people thinking food comes from the supermarket, phones, tablets, TVs ,computers do not just come from the local electrical retailer.
