World Space week

This year, world space week runs from the 4th to 10th October with a code along event running on the 6th.

World Space Week Highlights 2022

Sustainability in space relates to how humanity uses space, most pressingly, the orbital area surrounding Earth – itself a finite resource. At the start of 2021, there were 6,542 satellites listed as being currently in orbit by the UN. In order to ensure the sustainability of future space activities, we must ensure that space debris can be cleaned up, and not pose a threat to future missions. Achieving sustainability from space is a different ask – this addresses how space can help to achieve a cleaner, fairer and safer planet Earth. This includes measuring climate change, identifying pollution on land and at sea, supporting agriculture in developing nations – an endless list Of the 169 targets that form the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, 65 directly benefit through Earth observation satellites and related technologies.

How to Teach Online Courses (17 September 2022) · Events (Indico)

A few years ago I was involved with Debian Academy. For various reasons the project came to a halt.

Fast forward to 2022 and the project has now been restarted, the first course being presented is on how to create a course using Moodle. The will be presented from the 17th September.

The course is free to sign up to, you will need an account on the Moodle system. Further details are below.

Over time more courses will be created, which is one of the reasons the above course was created, so others can also create their own courseware.

BASH Videos

I am trying to make some really simple screen cast videos, illustrating a few BASH commands. These are being published on my peertube account

They should also be federated to Mastodon.

To give an example, this video shows usage of the rename command

Online Safety Bill

Hopefully this bill, if it ever gets in t law, will really start to make tech companies more responsible.

We need to prevent more incidents such as reported here Daily mail – schoolboy dies attempting TikTok blackout challenge. However, saying this perhaps holding the content creators more to account may also provide some sort of deterrent such as this reported by USnews – Alex Jones Loses Lawsuit Over Sandy Hook 'Hoax' Conspiracy. So in the case of the blackout challenge, hold the original poster of this to account and sue them, this could prove rather costly esp if undertaken via US courts, and the award being sought is in the millions of dollars.

We already have laws that cover this, so slander, defamation and libel can all get you sued for damages.

We still allow freedom of expression / speech, but creators would be held responsible for the consequences, just as they are in the real world out side of cyberspace. Tech companies could help by providing information on those who started these trends, or be held responsible or at least partly. Education and awareness should still be top priority, but just hold people to account.

We also need safeguards against tech companies handing data to police, such as in this case reported in NYPost Facebook gave teen’s private messages about alleged abortion to Nebraska police. If tech companies can do this, they can also hand over data on sex offenders and other serious criminals to the police too Tech companies can't pick and choose what they report.

At the same time I also appreciate we need protection for journalists and some activists who use technology to communicate and report on sensitive issues and or oppressive regimes for example.

All we need now is for the next Uk government to get their finger out and get this in to law.
