Big Blue Button

I have made a 5 minute video to showcase some of the features of the Big Blue Button video conferencing and teaching platform. I am not very confident with this, but I do try and get some main points across.

There are lots of really nice features, including video sharing, the latest release also has a much improved whiteboard feature.

Counter petition to keep LGBT content on the curriculum.

The petition to remove #LGBT content from the uk curriculum now has 190,671 signatures, sigh. It only needed 100k to force a debate in parliament, so that will be scheduled by #Uk Gov.

The counter petition is rapidly gaining ground, being newer. It now has 33,030 signatures, but we need more!

Can followers in the UK help sign the counter petition.

Snap Blocks

I was looking for something relating to the snap package on Debian, but happened up on another programming tool using blocks. So am sharing.

Snap is produced by the University of Berkley in California, and allows you to create code using blocks, but at the same time displaying corresponding Python 3 code. As with Scratch everything is stored in the cloud.

Something to take a look at during code club at some point.

More information can be found in the links below.

Visually create, save, and share projects, in the cloud, with Snap!, a blocks-based programming language. Brought to you by
UCBerkeley,

Libretexts

Another useful resource posted from Mastodon. LibreText, free amd open text books on a range of topics. Great if you want an introduction to a subject.

Their Mission

The LibreTexts mission is to unite students, faculty and scholars in a cooperative effort to develop an easy-to-use online platform for the construction, customization, and dissemination of open educational resources (OER) to reduce the burdens of unreasonable textbook costs to our students and society.

Embedded post – for reference

A good reason to join the millions who have joined Mastodon. If you join then please feel free to follow me on @[email protected] as I try and boost interesting toots such as the above.

Training update 3

I am slowly working through a SEND diploma course with New Skills Academy. As it is currently Anti Bullying week, I am undertaking a series of courses through the Anti Bullying Alliance

As of today 15/11/2022 I have completed :-

Course 1 : What is Bullying Course 2 : Bullying and the Law Course 3: The 10 key principles

There are about 10+ short courses in total, so will work through at least one per day, or at least aim to do this.

All this training is really proving beneficial, and is leading to me finding lots of really useful resources, so hopefully I can use these in schools.

Training update

In an effort to learn new skills and keep existing skills updated. Over the past week I have:

  • Finished studying for the Level 2 Teaching Assistant Diploma
  • Completed Prevent, this was in order to refresh prior learning
  • Completed Key stages of the National Curriculum course
  • Completed Mental Health First Aid course
  • Completed Mental Well-being in Children and Young people course

Mostly through the New Skills Academy. the prevent course is the official Home Office training.

I have also identified other learning, these course are now on my TO-DO list. I am now aiming to complete the SEND diploma. I really do need to be in a classroom to help with that, if nothing else context and support from employers and colleagues is essential.

Debian point release upgrade

Following the recent upgrade to the Debian Operating system, 11.4 to 11.5 I decided to make a video / screen cast of the upgrade process..

This was partly as I wanted to make something to contribute to the Debian Academy and it made sense to make this.

The video is quite long about ½. I am hoping the team can take the source file and edit so it is shorter.

Code Club 20/8/2022

The next Code Club will be on Saturday 20th August 2022 @ Paignton Library, we will carry on with what we are doing, mostly Hour of Code, block based programming, Scratch and the Free Code Camp responsive web design course.

We need MORE people in Torbay to come forward and run Code Clubs. Code Clubs could really benefit from working together too, so we can share expertise to benefit those who attend. We can then come together at STEM group meetings and share further.
