Software Freedom Camp

Just spotted this on the Fediverse (Mastodon)

The world celebrates Software Freedom Day today with the aim of increasing awareness of Free Software and its virtues, and it is in the same spirit and excitement that we announce today the Software Freedom Camp Diversity Edition. Diversity edition is aiming to reach out to people subject to systemic bias and impacted by under-representation in the technical industry in India.

We're glad to announce that the registration for both learners and mentors are open for Software Freedom Camp Diversity Edition – https://camp.fsci.in/news/sfcamp-dived-2021-registration-announcement/

Apply as learner – camp.fsci.in/learners/ Apply as mentor – camp.fsci.in/mentors/

Linux Mint 20.2 Ulma

The latest version of Linux mint [1] has now been released. I have downloaded the cinnamon edition to give it a go.

In my previous post [2] I gave a link to some suppliers of hardware, Linux mint is one of the OS's that can be pre-installed.

DEBIAN CONSOLE FONTS

I have found another way to change the Default Linux console font to something that is more readable, from the default which is really small text. The instructions are at [1]. This works on my current Debian [2] 11.0 set up, but as usual Your mileage may vary. If you ask on a forum, social media or IRC about this, please quote the website below [1] and not this blog post.

The contents of my /etc/default/console-setup are now as follows:-

 1 # CONFIGURATION FILE FOR SETUPCON
  2
  3 # Consult the console-setup(5) manual page.
  4
  5 ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-6]"
  6 CHARMAP="UTF-8"
  7 CODESET="guess"
  8 FONTFACE="TerminusBold"
  9 FONTSIZE="16x32"
 10 SCREEN_WIDTH="80"
 11
 12 VIDEOMODE=
 13
 14 # The following is an example how to use a braille font
 15 # FONT='lat9w-08.psf.gz brl-8x8.psf'
 16

Hopefully this is useful.

For the record my settings are:-

ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-6]"

CHARMAP="UTF-8"

CODESET="guess"
FONTFACE="TerminusBold"
FONTSIZE="16x32"
SCREEN_WIDTH="80"

VIDEOMODE=

Confy – Conferences schedule viewer

This was mentioned at the South Devon Tech Jam in May 2021, so thank you to Seabass for this. It is a conference schedule viewer, has been used as events such as Fosdem, so looks really good. I think Noisytoot was trying to compile this, so hopefully get an update over the next month and perhaps at the next Jam on June 12th. Or perhaps next week at the DCGLUG meet, Saturday 15th May 2021 @ 12:00 on jit.si.

I am also at a Debian Conference 2021 planning meeting on Monday 10th May, so will give this a mention too. Could be useful.

LP conference review

I spent the weekend at LibrePlanet, virtual free software conference hosted by the Free Software Foundation.

I was also a volunteer, moderating both IRC and Mumble chat.

Lots of great talks, conversation and advocacy. Lots of fun activities such as a virtual LibreAdventure conference, which let you walk around a virtual world and interact with other attendees, oh and not forgetting a Minetest server set up.

I caught the talk on Libre GPU hardware on Saturday and the talk on Public Money, Public Code too, Free software in Education and getting tasks done with Free Software. Will catch up with the others once they are up in a few days time.
