E-learning at work : COSHH – 1/6/2021

As I would like to try and work as a School laboratory technician. I am taking some steps to gain the essential skills and or knowledge for this post.

I therefore completed a course on Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) today. This is a step in the right direction, hopefully demonstrates a commitment to CPD. This also demonstrates the ability to identify and address training needs.

However this training is also essential for other workplaces too.

This course covers what you need to know about the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH). It’s aimed at anyone who is exposed to Substances Hazardous to Health at work, as well as line managers with responsibility for such people.

Creative Education: Teaching for Students with PMLD

2nd April 2021

Completed another Creative Education course today. Teaching for Students with PMLD

People with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) access the world around them in variety of different ways, it is our responsibility to present information and experiences in a way that will enable them to explore their own values, independence and become active participators in society. We can support this through offering experiences that are presented in a meaningful way for the individual and using a range of strategies, techniques and creativity. There is not just one fix but many facets and multiple elements that help enhance this drive to explore, understand and participate. Through this course, Sonya will offer practical advice tips and ideas on planning and delivering engaging, fun and exciting theme or topic-based activities to people with PMLD.

PMLD Certificate

I just wish I could WORK somewhere and make use of this. I am not doing this for the sake of it, I am doing this to improve skills, knowledge and expertise.

Creative Education: Spot the Warning Signs of Poor Mental Health

Spot the Warning Signs of Poor Mental Health

Mental Health Warning signs

Completed another Creative Education course today. This is an excellent course, mostly a summary of some of the key points / advice covered in previous courses. So what to look out for to spot signs a child may be having issues with mental heath, changes in their behaviour, physical appearance, interests and hobbies or perhaps their academic performance is going higher, due to them trying very hard not to fail, (so opposite extreme to their academic performance falling) trying to please self and others too much.

So some really good advice here.

I just wish I could WORK somewhere and make use of this.

Imposter syndrome with Creative Education

Imposter Syndrome: 5 tips for overcoming it

No matter how many years you spend in the profession, the first day back after a long break can feel terrifying. In this short course, I’ve shared some simple practical ideas to help you feel more confident about returning to school and to help you manage if things don’t go quite to plan.

Completed this on 7th March 2021. Thank you for making another course free for a week. This is great for my own personal & professional development and shows I am serious about finding ways to improve my skills.

Creative Education : De-escalation

I have just completed with Creative Education.

This is yet another really good course, covered lots of ground in an hour, how to recognise signs, cause of distress, and de-escalation techniques using verbal and non verbal methods, Looked at the ABC (Antecendents, Behaviour, Consequences) method to help us be more effective.

Can be used with young people, by facility staff or equally by parents.

Great course, and looking forward to another free course next week perhaps.

Hopefully this shows I am willing to learn.

Anxiety: Supporting Teens to Support Themselves

As well as looking for work, I am also trying to take any opportunity to learn new skills. The Creative Education courses are really good for this.

So to day I completed “Anxiety: Supporting Teens to Support Themselves” which, as with the course I did last week, has lots of really good useful hints and tips on how to help teenagers cope with anxiety, how we as adults can help, but also reflect on our own experience which can feed in to how we can help.

The important take away from this is, that adults, we can listen, re-assure and use many techniques and strategies to help. By understanding how a person is feeling, we can adjust our strategy.

Course also covered how sleep can play a part in this, how lack of sleep can cause issue, how we can make stress and anxiety manageable by looking at what works for the young person we are trying to help.

Also looked at how we can empower young people to take control and self manage, or if there is a situation that is out of their full control.

So another really useful course, if there is another 'free for a week course' next week, I will sign up to that too.

These courses may also be useful in other work too, perhaps at code club or even when helping or working with adults.

I am also interested in Space, astronomy and space sciences, so I think going forward Mental Health of Astronauts may be a very interesting field, being on the Moon is a short trip, getting to Mars, will be a longer, more dangerous journey, we need to look after the people that go on long space missions. Perhaps also look after their families back on Earth, especially children and young people who have family members on these missions.

Hopefully employers will appreciate my efforts to improve my skills and knowledge.

Scratch Spiral Project

So in this activity, we are going to try and produce a spiral using Scratch code. This is similar to what Spirograph [TM] produces.

It should look something like this when complete.

spiral1

Open up Scratch 3 in a browser and create a new project.

  1. Start off with the when Green Flag is clicked block

Green Flag

  1. Set the Sprite to the centre of the stage

Set To Centre

  1. Add a block to erase anything drawn on the stage from previous projects, then put Pen Down.

Erase and Pen Down

  1. Now add the Main Loop blocks as follows

Main Loop

  1. Your final code should look like this

Final Code

When run, you should see it draw circles on the screen, move and re-draw, eventually building up a layer on layer spiral pattern with circles.

The method here for drawing circles could be used in other projects too.
