STEM Group 12/8/2023 Write up

The session today was a steady stream of people in to room 12. We had a few things going on:-

Sand box craters

Dropping stones in to a tray of sand to simulate meteors hitting the surface of a planet or moon and resulting in craters. Interactive activity. The planning for this is here Magnesium in Vinegar

This was a demonstration so adding some Magnesium ribbon to some Vinegar in conical flask. This was topped up with more Magnesium a few times during the session.

Magnets

I set out a magnet and various different materials, including copper coins, paper clips and eventually added a spatula, Magnesium ribbon and copper foil so visitors could experiment to see which materials were magnetic.

Programmable Caterpillar

This is an electronic teaching aide, The idea is that the different segments have different instructions, for example; Forward, Left, Right, Play music, the segments can be put connected together in different orders so that pressing the start button the caterpillar moves around as per instructions, this proved really popular.

Bubbles

Using pre-prepared bubble solution, that has Sugar as an ingredient, bubbles can be made so they can be caught and not pop as easily, this again proved popular and we managed to get bubbles to stick together, make bug bubbles and even bounce bubbles around on some material.

Ball Shooter

This is a kit that I built up last year, the idea is the two spinning disks propel a ping pong ball forward.

Hair Dryer ping pong ball balancing

Using a Hair dryer in an upright position, it is possible to balance a ping pong ball on the air pocket produced by the dryer. This is a demonstration of Bernoulli’s Principle an explanation of this and the experiment can be found here

Simple Acid / Alkalis

I got out some of the test tube racks & test tubes and we had a go at seeing what happens when red cabbage indicator is added to vinegar and Bicarbonate of soda solution. This went well, we even had a go at mixing the solutions but extended this to include mixing Bicarbonate of Soda powder with citric acid powder, then adding water to produce a reaction.

Conclusion

So in all a very good session, and it generated some interest and ideas for the session in September. I also proved that I can communicate with children, young people and adults and run activities that are engaging and have a fun, learning element to them too.

Next STEM group

The next STEM group event will take place on the 9th September. I will post updates to this blog too.

STEM Group 12/8/2023

The next stem group will be on Saturday 12th August 2023, 11am to 15:00. But will be slightly different.

Due to a Fun Family Festival taking place, which I am helping with as it also ties in nicely with the STEM group. I am planning an activity around:-

  • Sand box craters
  • Plus there will be other science based demonstrations or activities. Activity will be in Room 12.

As a result, IT LEARNING CENTRE WILL BE CLOSED

The main Stem group blog is here.

For information contact Paignton Library directly with regard to any questions about this.

The next stem group will be on 12th July 2023, 11am to 15:00. We will carry on from the previous code club, but also look at our own projects a bit more.

Due to a science festival on the ground floor support for activities in the IT room will be limited. I will be undertaking some science activities on the ground floor, which will include

  • Sand box craters

STEM Group 8/7/2022 Write up

A good session today, firstly we had Vance, who demonstrated some of his Microcontroller projects.

Neopixel

This project uses neopixel strips which are addressable and programmable. in this project the lights can flash change colour and record light level changes. A video can be found here

IT Room

Microcontroller clock, the colours represent the hours, mins, and seconds. This was taken at about 10:30. A video can be found here

We also did some more Scratch, with people making good progress. Hopefully get back to Python at the next code club on the 22nd July. We also had a go at some Rocks and diamonds, which went really well. I have made some videos on making your own levels.

The LED project I am working on has also been rewritten with help from The code is now more efficient. I will make a new post about this.

STEM Group 8/7/2022

The next stem group will be on 8th July 2023, 11am to 15:00. We will carry on from the previous code club, but also look at our own projects a bit more.

We will probably carry on with programming, we are using a mix of different websites for this. These are listed below.

I will bring my Pi Pico, as I have upgraded the Larson scanner from last week to just use red LEDs. Still hoping to find a someone who can make the code more efficient.

Useful Links

I have been working on a few simple Raspberry Pi Pico projects, so should be able to demonstrate something at the next event. Hopefully more than just a flashing LED.

Please see a blog post from 10th June for some information as I am using this projects book to help me.

IT Room

I will post further updates to my main blog

Networking and SSh

I have decided to republish these links as there are a few people on the Fediverse who work or are involved in InfoSec and CyberSecurity.

These videos are a starting point for understanding networking and also SSH which allows remote login to remote computer.

So next up are the links to the videos on Networking and another video on OpenSSH (SSH being Secure SHell of course.

I am reposting links to previous blog posts that looked at these topics:-

I can be contacted on Fediverse / mastodon, search for @[email protected].

I have decided to republish these links as there are a few people on the Fediverse who work or are involved in InfoSec and CyberSecurity. These videos are a starting point as it is very useful to understand how to use the GNU/Linux command line along with related tools in general.

You may find the links on the BASH Basics post useful

Raspberry Pi – Micropython book

I now have a copy of the Raspberry Pi, MicroPython book which is aimed at users of the Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller board.

MicroPython book

I will bring this to the meeting today, along with some other resources. I also bought a Raspberry Pi Pico. I can experiment with this at home before Saturday.

pi pico

So hopefully, we can do some more hardware / software hacking with this.
