136 years ago today, Congress made Yosemite a park. The famous valley wasn't in it

Carleton Watkins, Yosemite Valley, ca. 1865

Oct 1, 1890. 136 years ago today, Congress created Yosemite National Park, and drew the boundary around the famous part.

The Valley itself was not in it. It had already been handed to California back in 1864, Lincoln's signature, the country's first real 'let us keep this one.' So the brand-new park was a ring around land it did not own. Only in 1906 did the state give the Valley and the giant sequoia grove back, so they could finally join the park that already shared their name.

Why did anyone care? A photographer, Carleton Watkins, hauled a giant camera up those cliffs in the 1860s, and his pictures did the arguing for him. The Valley got a publicist before it got a park.

This picture is one of his. Ca. 1865.
