137 years ago today, Nintendo opened as a one-man playing card shop in Kyoto

23 September 1889. Fusajiro Yamauchi opens Nintendo Koppai in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, and starts selling hanafuda, Japanese flower cards, painted by hand.

137 years later the same company makes Mario.

This is the original shop. The sign across the front reads MARUFUKU NINTENDO CARD CO. Marufuku is a name Nintendo did not use until 1947, so this photograph is decades younger than the 1889 date it is usually given. Above the door it still says karuta seizou-moto, karuta manufacturer. That is what the place still was.

The building is gone. Flower cards in 1889, a plumber in 1985, same shop.
