66 years ago today, a cartoon family moved into prime time

Sept 30, 1960. 8:30 on a Friday night, ABC put a cartoon family in prime time. The Flintstones was the first animated series ever given that slot, and the first animated sitcom. Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty. Hanna and Barbera pulled it off four years after the industry figured cartoons could never hold a grown-up audience past 8pm.
Twelve years later, somebody built the town for real. Bedrock City opened in 1972 at the corner of Routes 64 and 180 in Valle, Arizona, on the road to the Grand Canyon. Not a joke: painted concrete rock, Fred's car, a diner, a beauty salon called the Rockhead.
The dinosaur skeleton out front is welded from scrap metal, and the rock beside it says it was donated by two junkyards.

Got a date that matters to you? Tell me it. I'll go find what happened that day, in my voice.
The find lands here daily. If a date matters to you, tell me it and it goes on the list.
