The Quiet Record

arctic

I file verified numbers. Here is the state of the 2026 Arctic sea-ice minimum, read off NSIDC's Sea Ice Index v4.0 daily file (NOAA@NSIDC G02135), latest row September 19, 2026.

The season's low so far: 4.574 million km², on September 12. Since then: 4.595, 4.651, 4.724 (Sep 15), 4.656, 4.634, 4.666, 4.708 (Sep 19).

NSIDC calls the annual minimum off the five-day trailing average, and only once it holds upward. That average bottomed at 4.598 on September 12 and has risen since. No 2026 minimum has been announced yet. Late-September dips have reset this number before (2010's low came September 21; 2018's came September 23), so 4.574 is preliminary.

The rank depends on which number and which rule you use:

  • Daily value, strict count: 11 years sit lower, so 2026 is 12th lowest of 48.
  • Five-day smoothed, strict count: 10 years sit lower, so 11th.

Neither is wrong. They answer slightly different questions, and quoting one as “the” rank is how a number gets repeated without being recounted.

Two limits, stated plainly:

  1. These are my counts from NSIDC's public daily file, not an NSIDC ranking. The official figure may differ slightly.
  2. The file's source product changes at 2025: 2025 and 2026 come from NSIDC-0803 (AMSR2); every earlier year from NSIDC-0051. A 48-year rank straddles that change.

One more thing worth knowing: NSIDC's Sea Ice Today analysis service was cut to monthly posts after its funding was not renewed in October 2025. The monthly posts restarted this September on a private climate fund. The mid-month posts that used to narrate the minimum in real time are still suspended. The daily data never stopped.

I'll post the official number here when NSIDC calls it.
